DO YOU KNOW THAT THESE DRUGS CAUSES HAIR GROWTH?

Drugs are majorly substances that when taken causes a temporary physiological change in the body. These changes can include unpleasant effects that happens in addition to the main effect, which are often termed as "Side effects".

Well, there are actually some Side effects that i believe are not entirely unpleasant, at least not the side effect of "Minoxidil" a drug used to treat patients with severe hypertension. One of the side effect of this drug is Hypertrichosis.
Image result for hypertrichosis

Hypertrichosis also known as Werewolf syndrome, is a condition characterized  by excessive hair growth on a person's body. Hypertrichosis was a common side-effect in those taking minoxidil tablets and included the regrowth of hair in male balding in several studies carried out. This led to the development of a topical formulation of minoxidil for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (baldness) in men and subsequently in women. As in, excessive hair growth on the face, head...beard gangs do you get what I am trying to say? My fellow receded hairline sisters are you following? Unfortunately, minoxidil topical formulation can only stimulate hair regrowth, it cannot stimulate hair growth where there's normally no hair.

Despite much research over 20 years we still have only a limited understanding of how minoxidil stimulates hair growth.
More so, Hypertrichosis should not be mistaken for Hirsutism.

Other drugs that can have hypertrichosis as Side effect include:
  • Streptomycin - increased hair growth in children (of both sexes) has been reported,
  • Diphenylhydantoin - hypertrichosis seen more in females,
  • Corticosteroids - facial hypertrichosis may result from prolonged or intensive therapy,
  • Penicillamine - associated with hypertrichosis affecting the trunk and limbs,
  • Psoralens - may induce temporary hypertrichosis on light-exposed areas,
  • Diazoxide - hypertrichosis occurs in 50-100% of children treated. However less than 1% of adults develop hypertrichosis.
  • Cyclosporin A - results in an increase in hair growth in 44% of patients treated. Hypertrichosis is reversible on discontinuation of therapy.
  • Phenytoin
  • Spironolactone
  • Zidovudine

ONE DAY YOU MIGHT NEED TO HELP SOMEONE HAVING A SEIZURE - HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

About 1 out of 10 people may have a seizure in his or her lifetime. That means seizures are common, and one day you might need to help someone during or after a seizure. Would you know what to do?

When most people think of a seizure, they think of a generalized tonic-clonic seizure, also called a grand mal seizure. In this type of seizure, the person may cry out, fall, shake or jerk, and become unaware of what’s going on around them.

Here are things you can do to help someone who is having that type of seizure:
1. Ease the person to the floor.
2. Turn the person gently onto one side. This will help the person breathe.
3. Clear the area around the person of anything hard or sharp to prevent injury.
4. Put something soft and flat, like a folded jacket, under his or her head.
5. Loosen ties or anything around the neck that may make it hard to breathe.
6. Time the seizure. If the seizure lasts more than 5 minutes, call a medical emergency number.

Stop! Do NOT

1. Do not hold the person down or try to stop his or her movements.
2. Do not put anything in the person’s mouth. This can injure the teeth or jaw. A person having a seizure cannot swallow his or her tongue.
3. Do not try to give mouth-to-mouth breaths (like CPR).
People usually breathe on their own after a seizure.
4. Do not offer the person water or food until he or she is fully alert.

Seizures don’t usually require emergency medical attention. Only call 112 or 767, if one or more of these things happen:

1. The person has never had a seizure before.
2. The person has difficulty breathing or waking after the seizure.
3. The seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes.
4. The person has another seizure soon after the first one.
5. The person is hurt during the seizure.
6. The seizure happens in water.
7. The person has a health condition like diabetes, heart disease, or is pregnant.

First Aid for any Type of Seizure

Here are many types of seizures. Most seizures last for a few minutes. Here are general steps to help someone who is having any type seizure:

1. Stay with the person until the seizure ends and the person is fully awake. After it ends, help the person sit in a safe place. Once they are alert and able to communicate, tell them what happened in very plain terms.
2. Comfort the person and speak calmly.
3. Keep yourself and other people calm.
4. Check to see if the person has any medical/emergency information on.
5. Offer to call a taxi, friend, or relative to make sure the person gets home safely.

I urge Lagosians to dial 112 or 767 (LASAMBUS) on their phones anytime they have or observe a medical emergency.
Taking pictures and recording videos of the situation will not help the person rather it would only induce stigma.

KNOWING THE EXACT TYPE OF RASH WILL ENSURE THE RIGHT TREATMENT (WITH PICTURES)

Rashes can appear anywhere on the body, including the butt. Rashes can be painful or itchy and lead to blisters in some cases. Most people associate rashes with babies and toddlers, but people of all ages, including adults, can get rashes. Many things from a heat rash to allergies and sexually transmitted infections can cause rashes.

Adults may experience rashes caused by any of the following:

Heat rash: This itchy, red rash often appears as blisters or red bumps during hot weather.

Heat rash

Ringworm: More commonly known as jock itch, ringworm is a fungal infection that causes a red, ring-shaped rash in the groin and butt area. The rash is often very itchy.
Ringworm

Contact dermatitis: This itchy rash is inflammation of the skin caused by direct contact with an irritant.
Contact dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis: Also known as eczema, this causes dry skin that tends to be itchier at night.
Eczema

Psoriasis: This is a condition that causes skin cells to build up and form itchy dry patches or scales. Scientists think psoriasis is the result of an immune system problem.

Intertrigo: This is an inflammatory condition most commonly found in skin folds. It tends to be accompanied by or worsened by an infection.

Acne: Acne that forms on the buttocks is often different from the acne found on the rest of the body. An infection in the hair follicles from shaving or general friction (folliculitis) causes acne on the butt.
Acne

Shingles: This viral infection is related to chickenpox and causes a severe itchy rash on one side of the body. Shingles normally affects older adults that have had chickenpox.

Genital herpes: This common sexually transmitted virus causes rash-like symptoms around the genitals and anus.

Candida: Candida is a fungus that lives on skin and causes yeast infections. Yeast infections may cause intense itching and a spreading rash.

Incontinence dermatitis: Rashes thrive and develop in warm moist areas. Often, adults who deal with incontinence wind up with incontinence-related irritation and raw skin.

Some rashes may respond well to home remedies while others may need medical attention.
Contact your nearest healthcare provider if you experience any of these types of rashes.

Wish you a fulfilled week

SCHIZOPHRENIA, BI-POLAR, DEPRESSION AND OTHER MENTAL DISORDERS

In Nigeria, awareness and knowledge of Mental Disorders is at its lowest, making it difficult for people to access adequate and prompt medical attention.

Factors such as lack of health facilities, low socioeconomic status reduces the number of patients getting proper mental health care.

Mental health, as defined by World Health Organisation (WHO) is a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to her or his community. It includes how we feel about ourselves, how we feel about others and how capable we are of meeting the demands of life.
Mental Disorder on the other hand, according to WHO is collectively all diagnosable mental disorders or health conditions that are characterised by alterations in thinking, mood or behavior associated with distress and/or impaired functioning.

It has been researched that the common types of mental health disorders affecting Nigerians includes the following:

SCHIZOPHRENIA

It is the most severe form of functional mental illness affecting most Nigerians and is also found to be the most common mental disorder worldwide. It is commonly described as a severe, chronic and disabling mental disorder characterised by psychotic episodes with recurring functional periods of disordered thought process. It mainly affects perception and thinking; hence, gives rise to a spectrum of clinical scenarios.
Common symptoms of schizophrenia include:
Delusions - An unshakable theory or belief in something false and impossible, despite evidence to the contrary;
Hallucinations - involve hearing, seeing, feeling, smelling, or even tasting things that are not real; Disturbance of thought - Intrusive thoughts or mental images of harming/killing ones spouse, parent, child, or self,Repeatedly worrying that one has or will physically assault another person, Repetitive thoughts that one has said or written something inappropriate;
Disorganised speech - . A person engaging in disorganized speech might quickly jump from one unrelated topic to another, engage in incoherent “word salad,” repeat things another person says back to them, or appear to be speaking with nonexistent entities;
Difficulty in concentration and poor memory.

ANXIETY DISORDER

This is a heterogeneous group of disorders with abnormal fear and stress as the main underlying disorder. Anxiety is said to be a mental disorder when symptoms interfere with the individual’s normal day to day productive activities.
It’s harmful effects outweigh its benefits because fear and stress is necessary for human survival.
An anxiety disorder involves an excessive or inappropriate state of arousal characterised by feelings of apprehension, uncertainty or fear.
This Anxiety can be differentiated into Generalized Anxiety Disorders (GAD)-people with GAD feels anxious and worry excessively almost every day for at least 6 months. For the most part, people with GAD report either that they are "always worried".
Panic Disorder (PD)- A panic attack is a sudden rush of intense fear or discomfort, which includes at least 4 of the following symptoms: racing or pounding heart, sweating, shaking or trembling.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)- Sufferers of OCD have the need to constantly check on people or items because they generally fear that something bad will happen if they stop checking.
Phobic disorder - The fear can be of a certain place, situation, or object. Unlike general anxiety disorders, a phobia is usually connected to something specific.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and Acute stress disorder - Acute stress reaction (also called acute stress disorder, psychological shock, mental shock, or simply shock) is a psychological condition arising in response to a terrifying or traumatic event, or witnessing a traumatic event that induces a strong emotional response within the individual.

BIPOLAR DISORDER

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness - is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks.
These moods range from periods of extremely elated and energized behavior (known as manic episodes) to very sad, or hopeless periods (known as depressive episodes).

DEPRESSION

Depression (major depressive disorder or clinical depression) is a common but serious mood disorder. It causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working. To be diagnosed with depression, the symptoms must be present for at least two weeks.

These amongst other mental health disorders prevail in our society, With each of these disorders having distinct clinical futures.

Before now, I myself didn’t know that I’ve had a mental disorder, I been think say nah normal. Thank God for awareness.

I kindly urge you to help share, to increase awareness of mental health disorders.
Also do not hesitate to contact a healthcare provider if you experience any of the above symptoms or contact me.

Can Tramad0l affect Premature Ejaculation? - Myth or Fact

Back in Pharmacy School, I was taught that the drug Tramad0l, is a narcotic drug i.e a drug that can blunt your senses and for this, having side effects that can lead to dependence and ultimately abuse. Therefore making it a prescription drug in some countries - but not in Nigeria.
My experience working in community pharmacies has however opened my eyes to other "street uses" of "Trams" as it is popular called. I noticed that more men request for this drug more than women and even at a higher doses. Initially, I believed they were taking the drugs for its side effect -the euphoric feeling but with more clerking, some men actually told me they use to enhance their sex performance. I can remember being wawu'ed and wonder how people get to know the off label uses of these drugs. So since then, I have been researching on Trams and it association with sexual performance...

...and yes. Trams has shown efficacy in Premature ejaculation.
Premature ejaculation (PME) is defined as ejaculation with the minimal sexual stimulation before, on or shortly after penetration and or before a person wishes it.
Although the mechanism by which Tramad0l delays ejaculation has not been elucidated, most of the patients included in the studies reported that the drug reduced penile sensitivity, especially the gland penis. The sex life of patients improved and they reported greater satisfaction with the sporadic treatment.
However, there are many considerations on the use of tramadol. First, the long-term use can result in drug addiction, difficulty in breathing and the beneficial effect of tramadol in PME is yet not supported by a high level of evidence. In addition, despite its advantage for management of PME, Tramad0l can induce Erectile dysfunction as a side effect. This should be kept in mind. Before usage, it is required to carefully investigate the risk and benefit for each patient.
Adverse reactions of therapeutic use of tramad0l include nausea and dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, increased sweating, vomiting, dry mouth, constipation.
Tramadol is abused for its calming and euphoric effects. People who abuse tramadol usually feel relaxed and happy. Misuse of this drug can cause dependence, addiction, or death especially in a child or other person using the medicine without a prescription. A study from 2005 found that 84 percent of patients who abused tramadol in very high doses had seizures within 24 hours.

Take Tramad0l exactly as prescribed. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Tramad0l can slow or stop your breathing, especially when you start using this medicine or whenever your dose is changed. Never take this medicine in larger amounts, or for longer than prescribed. Tell your doctor if the medicine seems to stop working as well in relieving your pain.

Have a World Cup fever-filled Sunday.
